Description: The carapace of an Arrau giant river turtle. This incredible specimen was brought to the UK by a cargo ship sailer around the turn of the century. The animals were hunted by spear on the Amazon and the meat consumed. On the arduous journey home (which could take months) the men would remove the shell and polish the bone that remained. With enough effort a mirror finish could be achieved and the beautiful object would be presented often to their mother or sweetheart.
